While CBD is a compound that’s still undergoing extensive research, many people use it to alleviate some of their health issues. Naturally, many people are worried about whether one can build a tolerance for CBD because that would mean one would have to gradually increase the dosage each time in order to experience the same effects.

Is it Possible to Build a Tolerance to CBD? 

If you’re looking for a short answer – the answer is no. 

For a more elaborate answer, we have to dive a bit deeper into scientific studies and reviews. 

The first thing you should keep in the back of your mind is that CBD is not an addictive substance. That means you can stop using it whenever you feel inclined without the fear of having to experience any withdrawal consequences whatsoever. 

On top of that, CBD does not have psychoactive properties, meaning it won’t get you high or intoxicated. Since it doesn’t cause a high, it’s not something that’s sought-after because of its “cool” properties but rather because of its potential therapeutic properties. 

Some studies have concluded that long-term use of THC can indeed result in building THC tolerance, but the most surprising part of these studies is that CBD actually works in a completely opposite way. In fact, some studies have shown that long-term exposure to CBD can result in reverse tolerance rather than the opposite. 

Reverse tolerance is a somewhat known phenomenon in which a user needs less of a particular substance, in this case CBD, in order to experience the same effects they would have otherwise experienced with a “regular” dose. This means that, over time, some CBD users may find lower doses to be just as effective as their starting dose. With that being said, the whole concept is still under extensive research.

So, can you build a tolerance to CBD? The answer is – it’s highly unlikely.

What are the Effects of Long-Term CBD Use? 

The main issue in determining the long-term effects of CBD is that it’s simply not sufficiently researched. Since the introduction of the recent legislative measures that have somewhat allowed for more research, the vast majority of available studies include subjects who have been experimenting with CBD for only a couple of months. 

With that being said, even though it lacks research, CBD has been recognized as an addiction-free substance with little to no side effects. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that suggests that CBD may be a viable way of alleviating the adverse effects of various conditions. However, since its expansion is still in its infancy, we cannot know for sure how wide the spectrum of long-term effects of CBD is.

The Potential Benefits of CBD

Now that we’ve somewhat answered the questions about tolerance, addiction, and safety, it’s time to focus on the advantages of CBD. Since it’s still being researched, take these perks with a grain of salt as most of them are inconclusive and anecdotal. 

  • Can CBD Help With Depression?

Depression is one of the biggest villains of the modern age, and as such, it has taken a toll on many people and has made it hard for them to have a functional social life. However, ever since CBD became popular, scientists have been interested in its antidepressant-like effects. Now, it’s important to point out that CBD is NOT a substitute for antidepressants or any medication for that matter. On top of that, CBD does NOT cure a condition but rather alleviates and mitigates the adverse effects of certain conditions. 

For example, in an animal study that was conducted and published in 2009, CBD induced antidepressant-like effects comparable to those of imipramine. These results were probably mediated by the activation of 5-HT1A receptors. While this is far from being conclusive evidence, it’s definitely a step in the right direction. 

Apart from its potential benefits in the fight against depression, CBD is also known for potentially being a great long-term treatment for chronic pain. Many people who struggle with chronic pain are frequently prescribed medications that are not only habit-inducing but also come with a plethora of side effects, some of which are almost unbearable. On the other hand, CBD does not have addictive properties and comes with far less impactful side effects, if any.

The Importance of Dosage 

Finding the right dose for yourself is seemingly the most challenging aspect of taking CBD. If it’s your first time trying CBD, we recommend you consult with a physician first. Having an opinion of a qualified expert is the best course of action for everyone who has little to no experience with CBD. In fact, you should always speak to your physician before adding or altering substances to your therapy. 

It’s also important to point out that a higher dosage does not necessarily mean better effects or results. As we’ve mentioned, since CBD does not induce a high, taking more of it will not yield better results, and on top of that, it will sometimes have the opposite effect.
