The legalization of medical marijuana throughout the United States has been continuing to spread. And it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down or stopping any time soon! We already covered medical marijuana card in Florida.

Have you ever looked into the possibility of you getting a medical marijuana card in your state? Do you happen to live in Massachusetts? If so, you can now obtain a medical marijuana card, if you qualify! Let us show you how to properly acquire a medical marijuana card Massachusetts accepts in their state dispensaries!

How To Get A Medical Marijuana Card In Massachusetts – Steps

1) Obtain the Appropriate Medical Recommendation

Just like other states with similar programs, Massachusetts will allow you to get a medical marijuana card if you suffer from a qualifying medical condition. The only way to prove to the state government that you are suffering from one of these conditions is to obtain the proper recommendation from a doctor. The only doctors that can qualify you to get your cannabis card are doctors that have registered with the state through the MMJ Online System.

The process becomes quite straightforward once you set up an appointment to see a properly registered doctor. You just need to be honest about your health conditions, and how you think that medical marijuana could help you.

If your doctor decides that you are a right fit for the Massachusetts medical marijuana program, they will then submit a completed patient certification electronically to the Medical Use of Marijuana Program. This will initiate the next step.

2) Fill Out the Patient Application

Once your doctor’s certification has reached the Medical Use of Marijuana Program, you will be sent an email detailing instructions on how to properly fill out the online patient application. A 4-digit unique PIN number will also be sent to you. The online patient application consists of two different parts:

  • The Virtual Gateway

The first thing that you will reach in the online patient application is the virtual gateway. Here you will be first asked to create your own personal account. Then you will upload your photo identification to confirm your identity. Once your ID is confirmed, you will be sent a confirmation email that allows you to continue and fully set up your patient account.

  • The MMJ Online System

After you complete the steps required in the virtual gateway, you will be sent an email link to the MMJ Online System. Here you will be asked to scan in your photo identification again as well as a current passport-style picture of yourself. This passport-style photo will be the picture that is shown on your medical marijuana card.

If you don’t have a passport-style photo in hand but have a picture of yourself on file with the Massachusetts RMV, you will be able to find and upload that particular photo through the MMJ Online System.

Once this step is completed, you will be required to pay an MMJ application fee of $50. If you are unable to post this payment, you might be able to submit proof of a low-income status in order to receive an application fee waiver.

Then you just review and submit your application. It should also be noted that a paper application is available for those who are unable to access the MMJ Online System.

Once your application is approved, you can print out a temporary MMJ card to use at dispensaries until your official card arrives in the mail. Make sure you keep your medical marijuana card on you at all times so that you won’t have to deal with any issues with the law.
