One of the most popular ways to supplement your life with CBD is to take CBD softgel capsules. This is because this type of supplement can be swallowed conveniently, very discreetly, and whenever, at your convenience.

While so many people know about CBD, and how it is the medicinal powerhouse compound in cannabis and hemp, they don’t know much about the softgel encapsulation process that makes their favorite health supplement. Here, we will take a closer look at this process and everything else about softgels.

What Is an Encapsulation Process?

Encapsulations refer to a variety of different processes that are used to enclose medicines in a usable form with a stable shell that is colloquially called a capsule. There are two main different groups of capsules, and they require different procedures in order to be made. These two types of pills are known as hard-shelled capsules and soft-gel capsules. You have probably had experience with both types of tablets through various oral medications and/or supplements.

What are Gel Capsules Made Of?

Both types of capsules are derived from aqueous solutions of gelling agents. The gelling agents used to make them are an animal protein, known as gelatin, or a variety of plant polysaccharide derivatives, such as modified forms of cellulose or starch.

The most common CBD pill encapsulation is a softgel encapsulation. This particular type of process uses gelatin. Incidentally, the capsules made from the modified plant polysaccharides are known as vegetable capsules. They produce a similar softgel capsule as the gelatin encapsulation method, but the procedure is much more expensive overall and produces a softer shell that has a higher breakage rate and is much more fragile.

Why Would Anyone Want to Encapsulate a Medicine or a Supplement?

Encapsulating a product that is meant to be ingested orally allows it to be more easily swallowed and measured. In essence, it makes the oral administration of any product much more efficient and easy. A hard-shelled encapsulation process is made for ingredients that are dry, powdery or are extremely small pellet-shaped compounds.

A hard-shelled capsule is, actually, made of two different capsules: one which is a smaller, interior capsule (known as the “body”) that is filled with the compound which is meant to be delivered into the body, and a larger, outer capsule that is called the “cap”. In comparison, a soft-shelled encapsulation process is made for ingredients that are dissolved into oils and can be held safely in one capsule barrier.

This is why a soft-shelled encapsulation procedure is used to make CBD pills since the initial CBD extraction results in the collection of a rich, oily end product, full of our favorite medicinal cannabinoid.

How Are Gelatin Capsules Made?

Gelatin capsules were originally made out of an iron mold, in which gelatin was poured into, filled with the needed medicine and then sealed. However, in modern times, softgel capsules are made with a machine known as a rotary die. These capsules are then filled with a process known as blow molding. As you can probably surmise, the current process consistently yielded many more capsules at a far quicker rate, while also vastly reducing waste.

Hopefully, now you understand the basics of what it takes to make softgel CBD capsules. But, perhaps you don’t know how you should go about to obtain some, for your personal use.
